Brady Carlson Wins Metropolitan Junior Boys' Championship (14-15)

   Hearty congratulations to Brady Carlson, a Junior on the St. Xavier High School Golf Team, which won the Ohio High School State Championship last season. (a story or two in a minute)

   Brady won his age group in the Cincinnati Metropolitan Junior Boys' Championship sponsored by the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association.  The event was played at the Hamilton Elks Golf Course, a Donald Ross design.

   I have helped Brady with his game for about three years.  He has great natural ability for the game, yet never boasts about his play...he is very matter-of-fact and humble about his abilities.  In fact, during our Lesson today, I did not even realize that he had won the 'Met', until it casually came up in our conversation.

   His dad and mom, Mike and Linda, take a very interested, yet calm, approach to his golf.  One of them attends every GOLF...SUCCESS Lesson with me.  I've seen Brady and his folks have their occasional li'l problems, yet...I've never seen (or sensed) Mike or Linda mad at Brady in any way about his golf.

   So often I see moms or dads mad at their children during and after rounds.  (Each year I attend about 20 to 40 Tournament Rounds in which GOLF...SUCCESS Players compete.)  This really makes me sad for them.  Golf, intrinsically, gives us a large amount of negative feedback.  Getting more negative feedback from our loved ones - can only make this difficult game - even harder for us.

   I'm reminded, now, of a very 'telling' thing I heard Johnny Miller say in 1998. 

   I was at the World Golf Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony;  My wife, Darlene and one-year-old son, Taylor - having been invited there by my Aunt Louise Suggs, who was being 'grandfathered in' to the new Hall as a charter member (1951) of the LPGA Hall-Of-Fame.

   Johnny said, "Y' know, people always asked how I could always, so brazenly, go after flags and constantly shoot so many blazing low scores.  I never knew the real answer until recently.  It's because of my Dad.  And I only realized this...kind of figured it out...in the last few years."

   Johnny continued slowly, "Y' see, no matter how I played...I always knew, when I got home, Dad thought I was great."

   I cannot say any more (tearing up just thinking about it).

   Congrats to you Brady!!!...you hit the shots, buddy.  Congrats also, Mike & Linda, for something even greater.

   Dozens of GOLF...SUCCESS Players will tee it up on Monday in the Hamilton County Park District Junior Golf Championship.  GOOD LUCK to all of you Junior Golfers!

   This has long been regarded as one of the premier Junior Golf Tournaments in the Greater Cincinnati area...winners of this event have often gone on to become very successful College Golf players.

   For the 13-17 year-old junior golfers...the first round happens at The Mill, second round at The Vineyard...then a cut - with the final round at Sharon Woods.

   For the 8-12 year-old junior golfers...they will play Meadow Links & Golf Academy on Monday, then Little Miami Golf Center on Tuesday

   The Memorial Tournament happens today through Sunday, here in Ohio.  The U.S. Open Golf Championship happens in two weeks.  Believe it or not, The PGA Tour season is already half over.

   Many of my GOLF...SUCCESS Students have shot their 'Best-Ever' and/or finished high in Tournaments.

My 11-Yr.-Old Son 'Beat' Me - From Same Tee Markers

   Welll, it finally happened.  Taylor 'beat' me, when playing from the same Tee-Markers.

   It happened last Tuesday.  I had a 'Play With the Pro' set-up with one of the St. Xavier boys I help.  Taylor asked if he could join us - and if the student could bring his little brother, who is a friend of Taylor.  I said 'ok'.

   Everything went fine, as normal.  We played the White/Middle Tee-Markers at Meadow Links & Golf Academy.

   One of the GolfPsych tenets is to really seek to 'not know what you're shooting', during the actual playing of your round.  It really does help ensure that you 'take one shot at a time'.

   I've grown to follow that concept better and better with each passing year.

   BUT, when Taylor eagled the 8th hole by knocking in his Gap Wedge from 'bout 80 yards...

   I confess, I was tempted to 'add up his score, in my mind'.

   I was real happy for him.  It was not until we sat down a few minutes later - in the Grill Area - that I realized (with his assistance) that he had shot even-par 31(E).  He had done that before...he has even shot 29(-2), from our Gold/Forward Tee-Markers.

   What he quickly pointed out to me, though, was that I had shot 33(+2).

   AND that it was the first time he had ever shot a lower score than me, while we played the same Tee-Markers.

   He actually first 'beat' me, about 5 years ago when he was around 6-yrs.-old.  But that was when he played from his "US KIDS TEES".  We played The Mill Course that day...he shot 36(E) and I shot 41 (+5).

   SO, you get the idea!!!

   I've always encouraged all of my Players to keep in mind, that in Golf...no one guards you!!!   AND you don't guard anyone else!!!

   It's not like a fellow-competitor can 'block your shot' or 'tackle' you, right?

   This is where the age-old adage comes from...."In golf, you only compete against the course and yourself".  Yourself and the course are your only two real competitors.

   I am just not saying a word about that to Taylor, for a while...let him have his fun, eh?

   Here's to geat 'Family Time' in our beloved Game!!!
